H. E. Shepardson

Shepardson, of Shelburne Falls, Massachusetts, was awarded his single brace patent (100,458) on March 1, 1870.  This very nice example is in the 10" sweep size, and is clearly marked with his name, location and patent date.

The patent chuck is distinctive, with curved jaws, grooved on their outer faces, that are moved forward when the chuck shell is twisted.  Shepardson's patent drawing indicates a Rose patent wrist handle, but this one has  two-piece walnut? handle with brass inserted ferrules.  The cup handle is cast iron with a brass slotted screw in the top.  Also distinctive is the shape of the bow, being less curved with straight-angled sides.
