Item C11 - Shipbuilder’s Slick. 3 3/8” Width.
This
wonderful early hand forged slick, with fishtail blade shape and ridge back, is
unsigned on the blade, but the handle carries the mark of Wm. Davis. Davis was
a spar maker in Hingham, Mass, having a shop and wharf on Summer St. from as
early as 1829. This is one of group of his tools assembled by Joseph
Richardson, Hingham historian. Aside from some mottling and very light pitting,
this tool is in great condition, with what appears to be an original hooped
handle carrying Davis’ mark. The edge width of the blade is 3 3/8”. The length
of the blade, from edge to top of the socket is 14 inches. The tool has an
overall length of 21 ½ inches, including the maple handle, with iron hoop. It
is in wonderful condition for a tool that looks to have been made in the late 18th
century. Richardson’s original string tag describing the provenance of this
tool is included. Fine.
