Lamond's research has shown that this distinctive double iron shave with loop
handles was designed by Leonard Bailey, using his 1876 patent (No. 182,881) that
was developed for his box scraper. This shave appeared in the Stanley
catalogue in 1876, and then in the 1883 Leonard Bailey & Co Catalogue, and then
back to the 1884 Stanley catalogue--and then is seen no more. The example
here is complete with all of the proper marks--"L. Bailey Patent" on the blade,
and "Patent" "Oct. 3, 76" cast in the frame on either side of the blade.
The thumb screw that secures the blade from the back of the shave is proper and
original. This is a rare and interesting tool for a collection.
