Item D16 - C.J. Kimball & Son (Bennington, NH) 9
inch Draw Knife
Caleb
Jewett Kimball founded an edge tool dynasty in New Hampshire as early as 1841,
and later formed C.J. Kimball & Son, in 1872. When he retired about 1892 the
company continued as C.J. Kimball & Co, making draw knives for Keen Kutter among
others, until 1900. The earliest mark was stamped (exhibited on this tool),
while the later one (post-1872) is an elaborate etching. Kimball made an
extremely handsome drawknife that features a smooth, delicately rounded taper on
the upper surface of the blade. They are instantly identifiable when you see
one across the room. The handles of his draw knives are usually made of turned
cherry. This 9" drawknife shows all of the Kimball characteristics, including
turned cherry handles. The handles are solid. The blade has almost no
pitting. It will be a great working draw knife. Good+.
