Item D6 - Loop Handled Spoke Shave.
A
number of manufacturers produced loop handled spoke shaves in the 1880s and a
bit later. Among the makers of this style of spoke shave was the Union Plane
Co. (and its antecedent, Birmingham Mfg. Co.). Models without front clamps
included examples with front screws and rear screws. The shave offered here
most closely resembles the Union No. 116, with raised handles and front screw.
The only marking on the blade is an arched, “L. & I.J. White”. The White Co.
in Buffalo, was a maker of spoke shaves, mainly for coopers. And is not
reported to have made this style of shave. My guess is that this tool was made
by Union (or Birmingham), and the White blade may be a replacement. It is a
comfortable shave to hold and use. The wingspan is 9 ½ inches, and the long
cutter has a 2 inch edge. While it has lost much of its original japanning,
there nothing to keep it from being a good working shave. Easily Good. $15.00
