Item M18 - U.S. Army Brass Letter and Number Stamp Set.
I’d
never seen this set before this May’s Brimfield Antique Fair, when I bought this
set, and later saw another in a Military tool dealer’s booth. Mine was the
second that this dealer had ever seen—being nearly unique for having a complete
letter set, as well as complete set of number stamps. The stamps are of solid
brass, with broad, flat tops to the letters and numbers, having an almost italic
font. These were made for stamping into leather, or with ink to mark canvas and
canvas webbing. The original olive drab paint on the fitted box has been
painted over with brown, but the set is otherwise perfect. It is a rare set of
stamps. The dealer’s asking price was nearly twice that of this set. Fine.
