Item M9 - Large Blacksmith Chromolithograph.
This
large unsigned, undated, chromolithograph is suspended between two wooden slats,
and may have been a picture decorating a calendar. The picture, unframed, is 24
inches high, and 34 inches wide. The scene depicts a blacksmith shop with two
forges being operated as two men flatten a piece of iron on a rectangular anvil,
and a third operates a bellows on the other forge. At least three anvils are in
the scene, plus arrays of tongs, hammers, horse shoes, and other tools and
stock. It is a dramatic scene. The lithograph is printed on heavy stock, that
does have an easily repaired tear or two. A label on the reverse, written in
Czech, suggests that this is from a series, entitled “Images of Craftsman Tools”
produced by the Jansky Publishing House, established in 1862. This will be a
great image for any collector of blacksmith tools. Good+
