Item P30 - Stanley No. 71 Router. Type 2 (1885-1888).
Stanley introduced its No. 71 router plane in 1884, and quickly began to
make some changes. This example is the second type and features "Stanley"
and "No. 71" cast into the base, while retaining the patent date encircling the
aperture. These early types were japanned. This example has had some
modifications made to it by a former owner. The first is two countersunk
drill holes have been added to the base in order to attach a wood sole or a
fence. Stanley made this modification later in the tools manufacture
history, and obviously inspired this alteration. Also, the stanchion that
holds the blade has been drilled and tapped to receive a threaded post to make
an adjustable blade depth feature like that manufactured after about 1902.
This would be easy enough to remove. The original cutter has been
modified to make this work. The japanning on the frame is better than 95%,
and the sole is clean and smooth--no pitting. There is a chip from the
front of the ornate ring that fastens the cutter. While this is an old,
and very uncommon type, it would still make a nice user that has some pizzazz.
