Item PHO1 - Albumin Photograph of a Wood Shop Class.
This
wonderful photograph depicts a bygone day when young high school students
engaged in shop class. The picture (with no attribution) depicts a group of
young boys (I’d guess 12 to 14 years old) at work on various refinishing and
construction projects in a wooden shed classroom. There are at least 14 boys
visible, with a distant man with a white shirt and tie, who must be the
teacher. The presence of a visible crucifix outside a door, and another hanging
on a wall suggests that this group of boys are enrolled in a Parochial school,
or even in a church orphanage. Some of the projects, such as a library table
being refinished and Corinthian columned niche suggest church furniture.
Chisels, a compass, and other tools can be seen hanging on the walls. The
wiring in the bare wood tie rods overhead, and the dress of the boys suggest a
time frame in the 1930s or 40s—perhaps in Europe. Altogether this is a great
photo a boys learning woodworking. The size of the photo is 10 ˝ x 13 ˝ inches
sight. The ebonized oak frame with gold liner is appropriate. I have reglassed
the picture and lined it with acid free backing. There is a $8.00 charge for
packing. Easily Good+
