The following John M. Taber planes were found in a single working collection in Fairhaven, Massachusetts (across the harbor from New Bedford).  John Marshall Taber, their maker, lived from about 1799 to 1873.  He was the son of Fairhaven plane maker Nicholas Taber, who turned his business over to sons John and Allen, about 1820.  Allen pretty quickly moved to Augusta, Maine, and John M. worked in Nicholas’ shop (by then in New Bedford, at 20 Elm Street) from1820 until his death (of “paralysis”) in 1873.  Taber was the pre-eminent plane maker in New Bedford, which during his lifetime, was about the richest city, per capita, in the United States.  His planes cut most of the moldings in the palatial homes of  New Bedford whaling ship owners and captains, and his cooper’s planes cut and shaped many of the barrel staves that served to hold the whale oil that made New Bedford the first oil boom town in the U.S.  During his 53-year working lifetime, John Taber had no partners but apparently trained many apprentices that fanned out over Rhode Island and New York
