Item B12 - John S. Fray & Co. (Bridgeport, CT) No. 337 Ratchet Bit Brace.
Known best for its Spofford braces, the John Fray Co also made a complete
line of ratchet and sleeve braces, many using Fray patents. This No. 337 is a
brace not often encountered, but it is a very nice one. Dating from the 1880s,
this one has pewter retaining rings on the rosewood wrist handle, and a fully
enclosed ratchet. The modified Barber chuck is nicely knurled, and the two jaw
chuck is clean and solid. The top handle is rosewood and is fully clad
underneath. The sweep is 10 inches. This was one of Fray’s better braces. No
rust or pitting, easily Good+
