Item B2 - Goodell-Pratt Farley Patent Brace.
This
unusual and rare brace carries the patent date of Sept 19, 1924 on its knurled
ratchet selector disk above the ratchet mechanism. This was Fred Farley’s
patent for a ratchet selector mechanism, number 1,508,512. It does not even
rate a NS (not seen) rating in Ron Pearson’s brace book, so it has to be a rare
brace—I’ve only seen one other. The brace is clearly marked by Goodell-Pratt,
but does not have a model number on it. It is a 10 inch sweep brace with orange
stained hardwood handles, and nickel plated steel retaining rings on the wrist
handle. This brace is not listed in my 1922 GP catalog, and apparently was
discontinued after the merger with Millers Falls in 1932. The brace features
original orange paint on the ratchet housing, but is nickeled elsewhere. It
has a pair of spring-loaded parallel jaws and should hold any bit. This has
some light storage rust on the frame and chuck shell that will clean off
easily. It is a rare brace in wonderful condition, and would suit a brace
collection or even use. Fine
