This
wonderful book should be better known to old tool buffs. First, because it
treats the specialized hand tools used on whaling ships in the 19th
Century (“whalecraft” refers to all of the tools (harpoons, blubber spades,
lances, boarding knives, blubber gaffs and pikes, etc) used to catch and process
giant whales. Second, an important section of the book deals with the (mostly
New Bedford) blacksmiths who crafted these tools. Many of these artisans
escaped notice by the Directory of American Toolmakers, published by the EAIA,
even though they usually signed the tools they produced. This book is in new
condition. It contains 256 pages, including 600 copies printed of this (latest)
edition. New.
