Item CP11 - Birmingham Plane Manufacturing Co. 6 inch Block Plane
The Birmingham Plane
Mfg. Co. was in business from 1885, using the name Derby Plane Mfg Co from 1891,
and then was purchased by the Union Mfg Co. in 1900. During its 15 year
history, lots of planes were designed and made by this firm. This 6 inch block
plane is fairly typical of their block planes, having a non-adjustable mouth,
and a lever-type blade adjustment mechanism. The boat-shaped plane is 2 1/6
inches wide at the shoulders, and has a 1 ¾ inch blade that is grooved on the
back to accept the adjuster. The blade is stamped, “The Birmingham / CONN /
Plane Mfg Co.” in a football shape. The blade is clean and long. Most of the
original japanning is worn from the lever cap and outer sides of the body, but
most remains in the bed. It has no cracks or chips. Good
