Item CP12 - Birmingham Plane Manufacturing Co. Iron Block Plane.
The
Birmingham Plane Mfg Co was in business from about 1885 until 1900, and produced
a plethora of block, bench, and specialty planes that included a number of
innovative types. The block planes, in particular, present a wide array of
types and sizes. This example is noteworthy for having a blade adjusting device
that involves a lever below the blade and frog, that when moved from side to
side, turns an eccentric cam that, in turn, moves a plate with a pin at its
lower end, engaged in a hole in the blade. By this the blade can be moved up
and down, effectively adjusting its position in the mouth. While no patent is
claimed for this mechanism, it is similar to that mechanism patented by Leonard
Bailey on June 22, 1858 (No. 20,615). The plane containing this blade adjuster
is 7 inches long, and 2 inches wide. The cutter is 1 ¾ inches wide and is
lightly marked by the Birmingham Plane Mfg Co. (on its back side). The blade
has a straight row of 5 holes to engage the adjuster pin. There is some pitting
on the blade, but the plane body is clean, with most of the original japanned
finish in the bed and on the cap. The front knob is brass, without knurling on
its edge. Good+
