Item CP15 - 18th Century Gunstocking Plane.

This
fabulous plane came with a group of older planes that appear to have originated
in southeastern Massachusetts. Included in the group were several A. Smith
planes, and another with a date of 1775 marked on the toe. This plane is not
marked, but has a combination of very early characteristics. These include: 13
¼ inch length, yellow birch, relieved wedge, flat chamfers, and bevel relief in
the front of the wedge mortise. This plane has its original iron, and is made
to bed a barrel which would be approximately 1 ½ inches in diameter—surely for a
punt gun or huge musket! Except for some splitting of the wood on either side
of the wedge, and a tiny bit of dry rot at the very heel, this plane is in great
condition. As a wonderful example of an early American plane in an uncommon
form, it belongs in a collection of early planes. Good+
