Item CP9 - Stanley No. 9 ½ Adjustable Block Plane. Type 2 (1874-75).
This,
the first type of the 9 ½ block plane to have the hooded lever cap, appeared
just two years after the introduction of this model by Stanley. It is quite
distinctive, having the hood covered with dimples, and a front edge design that
features three scallops on the inner border. This example is completely
original, with a blade adjusting lever with parallel sides, and a blade marked
with L. Bailey’s Aug 31, 1858 patent date. Like most, the back of the frog and
drilled and tapped to receive the wood handle that transforms it to a No. 9 ¾.
This one is in quite nice condition with much of the original japanning in the
bed, 5/8” of room left on the blade. Most of the japanning has worn from the
lever cap. There is a very small sliver (1/16 x 3/8) missing from the back of
the mouth, where someone probably levered the moveable sole with a screw
driver. It is an uncommon type. Good+
