Item DR5 - Millers Falls No. 666 Two-Speed Breast Drill.

Millers
Falls introduced this unusual breast drill in 1932, acquiring it from the
Goodell-Pratt merger. Probably it was made in
the image of the Goodell-Pratt No. 279 drill that had been produced before the
1932 merger of the two firms. Both have aluminum housings enclosing the drive
gears, both have a speed shifter from about 1 chuck revolution per crank
revolution to a 7:1 ratio, and both have ½” capacity three-jaw chucks. But this
is a very uncommon drill, these days as it was only made until 1938. This example works perfectly, but and
shows little wear. It is in excellent condition, with much of its original
finishes, although the detachable side handle is missing. The pressed
steel gear enclosure is described as being finished with ebony enamel, although
there is no trace of such a finish on this drill. The three jaw chuck works smoothly. An uncommon
drill, this is the
second one that I’ve found this year. Conjecture holds that MF numbered this
drill after the “Beast” in the Book of Revelations, and with a length of 19 ½
inches, it is a beast. Good+.
