Item P2 - Stanley No. 2 Smooth Plane. Type 17? (1942-45).
No. 2 planes are not faithful to the type studies, and this one is no
exception. I believe this one dates from the WWII days. Although it has a
rosewood tote (perfect—no cracks), and a keyhole lever cap, both the tote and
the knob have steel screw heads, and the rough finish on the lever cap looks
1940ish to me. The hardwood knob is larger than normal, but is right to the
plane. Nearly all of the original japanning is present in the bed. There is
some light pitting at the top of the long blade (with notched rectangle logo)
and chip breaker. But the rest of the plane, though dark, has no pitting or
other problems. It appears to be an uncommon (in my experience) relic of the
early 1940s. Easily Good+
