Item RR19 - R.B. Haselton (Groton, NH) 3 foot Board Rule.
The board rules and log calipers of Rufus B. Haselton are famous for the
graceful eagle stamp that adorns them. Rufus Haselton worked in Groton, NH from
at least 1860 until his death (1873). By 1879 his son, Herman, had moved to
Contoocook, NH, and continued using the eagle stamp, although it now included
Contoocook as the location of the rule factory. This 3-foot board rule may be a
bit unusual, and Haselton typically produced 2-foot and 4-foot board rules. It
is marked with the Groton place name, and is thus an earlier rule. The
stampings are clear on the rule, although the original finish is mostly lost,
and there are a few small areas of stain. The rule calculates the board footage
in planks from 6 to 20 feet long, with widths up to 36 inches. It has brass
tips on the ends, and a nice example of the eagle stamp. Easily Good
