Item S5 - Surgical Saw.
Most
surgical saws that you see have solid, flat blades, built in the form of a deep
bladed back saw. This unmarked example, however, is a frame saw, built like an
ordinary hack saw; but with its stainless steel construction, and handle and
blade tensioning knob, is more elegant. The overall length of the saw is 12
inches, and has blade with a 7 inch edge length. The filing is 15 tpi, rip.
The blade thickness is 22 thousandths. My thought is that in addition to being
a medical collectible, this saw would make a wonderful dovetail saw, right in
line with the hacksaws that the legendary Maine woodworker, Cecil Pierce, used
to make his great dovetail joints. Certainly, with a supply of hacksaw blades,
cut to the 7 inch length, you’d never have to worry about sharpening again.
