Item CP4 -
Stanley No. 19 Adjustable Block Plane. Type 2 (1889-93)
The first year
(1888) of the introduction of the Stanley Nos 18 & 19 block planes also was the
inception year of the lateral lever on Stanley block planes. This innovation
previously had been installed on the cast iron bench planes and wood bottom
bench planes in 1884. By 1889, Stanley incorporated its improved lateral lever
into the block plane lines and the type 2 Nos 18 & 19 block planes resulted.
This No.19 (7" sole length) is an example of the "new lateral" plane. It has
all of the proper features to go with the second lateral, including the arched
Stanley logo on the longish blade, no eccentric lever on the front knob, and the
excelsior type body with asymmetrical cheeks. This example is an exceptionally
nice one, without rust or pitting. About half of the nickel finish is worn from
the lever cap, but all of the shiny japanning remains in the bed. The
blade is long and clean. There is a tiny microchip from the rear of the
mouth that does not harm. It is a nice early block plane for a collection.
